IUI Treatment in Lahore
IUI (intrauterine insemination) is a fertility treatment in which specially prepared sperm is placed directly into the uterus around the time of ovulation. At Elysian Fertility in Gulberg 2, Lahore, IUI cycles are guided by ultrasound monitoring and supervised by Dr. Javaria Siraj, Reproductive Consultant and IVF Specialist.
Medically reviewed by Dr. Javaria Siraj (MBBS, FCPS; fellowship training in Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Dow University of Health Sciences, Karachi).
What is IUI?
Intrauterine insemination places a sample of sperm, prepared in the laboratory to concentrate the healthiest and most active sperm, directly into the uterus. This shortens the distance the sperm must travel and aims to improve the chance of sperm reaching the egg. Fertilisation then happens naturally inside the body.
IUI is often considered as an earlier, less invasive option before treatments such as IVF, depending on your circumstances.
Who may benefit from IUI in Lahore?
IUI may suit couples with:
- Mild male factor infertility, such as slightly reduced sperm count or movement.
- Unexplained infertility, when tests do not show a clear cause.
- Ovulation difficulties, often combined with ovulation induction. This includes some women with PCOS.
- Certain cervical factors that make it harder for sperm to pass through the cervix.
- Use of donor sperm.
Who IUI may not suit
IUI depends on the egg and sperm meeting inside the body, so it is not the right choice when both fallopian tubes are blocked, or when sperm quality is too low for natural fertilisation. In those situations IVF or ICSI is usually more appropriate. A fertility assessment shows which applies to you, so you do not spend time on a treatment that is unlikely to help.
The IUI process

Consultation & Assessment
Dr. Javaria reviews your history and arranges tests, including hormone tests, an ultrasound and a semen analysis, to confirm that IUI may be suitable.
Cycle Monitoring
the prepared sperm is gently placed in the uterus through a thin, soft catheter. The procedure is quick and usually causes little discomfort.
Timing Ovulation
ultrasound scans and timing identify the best window for insemination, sometimes with a trigger injection to time ovulation.
Sperm Preparation
the sample is prepared in the laboratory to concentrate the healthiest, most active sperm.
Insemination
The prepared sperm is gently placed into the uterus in a quick, straightforward procedure.
Pregnancy Test
arranged after the procedure, with next steps discussed by your team.
What to expect on the day
You will not usually need sedation. The procedure feels similar to a routine gynaecological examination, and most people feel only mild, brief discomfort. For a male partner providing the sample, the clinic explains how to collect and deliver it, and the usual advice is 2 to 5 days of abstinence beforehand [clinic to confirm instructions]. Our team explains each step before it happens.
IUI or IVF: how to decide
IUI | IVF | |
Where fertilisation happens | Inside the body | In the laboratory |
Egg collection | Not needed | Needed |
Medication | Sometimes, to support ovulation | Yes, to develop several eggs |
Tubes must be open | At least one | Not required |
Often considered when | Mild male factor, unexplained infertility, ovulation or cervical factors | Blocked tubes, endometriosis, low ovarian reserve, after IUI |
Both are planned around your results and age. Dr. Javaria explains which one suits you.
How many IUI cycles should you try before moving to IVF?
There is no single number. It depends on your age, test results and how long you have been trying. Many specialists suggest a limited number of IUI cycles before reviewing the plan, and Dr. Javaria may advise moving to IVF sooner if you are older or have other fertility factors. We give honest advice about when to move on, rather than repeating cycles that are unlikely to help. [Clinic to confirm whether to state a typical range of 3 to 4 cycles.]
IUI success: what affects it
There is no single success rate for IUI. Results depend mainly on the woman’s age, the cause of infertility, sperm quality, whether ovulation is well timed, and whether the tubes are open. Chances per cycle are generally lower than with IVF, which is why IUI is usually a first step rather than the only option. No ethical clinic can guarantee a pregnancy. At your consultation, Dr. Javaria explains realistic chances for your age and situation.
Risks and side effects
IUI is a low-risk procedure. Mild cramping can occur. If ovulation-supporting medication is used, more than one egg may be released, which can lead to a multiple pregnancy. This is why ultrasound monitoring matters: it lets Dr. Javaria adjust the cycle and keep that risk as low as possible. Rarely, infection can occur. We explain the risks relevant to you before you start.
IUI cost in Lahore, Pakistan: what affects the price
IUI costs less than IVF. The total depends on whether medication is needed and how many monitoring scans you require, so we do not publish a single fixed price. After your consultation, Dr. Javaria gives you a written estimate so you know the costs before you begin. Book a consultation to receive yours.
IUI vs IVF cost in Pakistan
IUI is the simplest and generally the least expensive treatment. IVF costs more because it involves egg collection, laboratory work and embryo transfer, and ICSI carries an extra charge when it is added to IVF. If IUI is unlikely to work for you, repeating cycles can cost more in time and money than moving on sooner. That is why we give a written estimate for the option that suits you rather than a one-size price. See IVF treatment for how that plan works.
How to choose an IUI centre in Lahore
- Confirm that a fertility specialist supervises your cycle, and check their PMDC registration.
- Ask how ovulation is monitored. Ultrasound-guided timing is better than guessing.
- Ask how the sperm sample is prepared.
- Ask when the clinic would advise moving to IVF. A good clinic answers honestly.
- Ask for a written estimate that lists what is and is not included.
